After winning Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards, Cate Blanchett received The Best Actress award at the Baftas for the role of Jeanette Francis in Woody Allen’s ‘Blue Jasmine’. It was one of the most emotional moments at the ceremony because Blanchett decidet to dedicate this honor to the late Philip Seymour Hoffman: “Phil, your monumental talent, your unflinching quest for truth both in art and in life will be missed by so many people. This is for you, you bastard, hope you’re proud” she said.
For many critics the fact that ’12 Years a Slave’ won only two awards (Best Picture and Best Actor – Chiwetel Ejiofor) came as a surprise. ‘Gravity’ winning six of eleven nominations, including The Best British Film award was even more surprising to the Brits who didn’t see it as British enough.
Moreover, Jennifer Lawrence beat Lupita Nyong’o in Supporting Actress category and Bakhard Abdi, who played a Somali pirate in Captain Phillips, won the Supporting Actor award over Michael Fassbender.
On the other hand, some find the selection of red carpet gowns far more interesting than the ceremony itself. While Cate Blanchett wore Alexander McQueen black satin dress, Lupita Nuong’o has chosen a green Dior Couture gown. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt showed up both dressed up in tuxedos – hers from Saint Laurent and his from Valentino. Amy Adams was in black too, wearing Victoria Beckham, and Lea Seydoux matched her royal blue Miu Miu dress with Chopard jewelry. Helen Miren looked dashing in Jacques Azagury gown teamed with Jimmy Choo clutch and Asprey jewelry, Lily Allen wore colorful Vivienne Westwood dress, and Uma Thurman looked amazing in tight navy dress by Atelier Versace.
Since the BAFTA ceremony took place during London Fashion Week it was interesting to see celebrities wearing British designers. Laura Carmichael wore Erdem strapless dress, Oprah Winfrey showed up in Stella McCartney gown and Olga Kurylenko has chosen a Burberry dress.
One of the most exciting things about every fashion week is monitoring fashion trends at front rows, parties and streets. New York fashion crowd is always cool and stylish, without being too eccentric and flamboyant. Apart from celebrities, it is always fun to see what bloggers and magazine editors are wearing. This week they were sporting mainly warm clothes as weather conditions were harsh, but there were also some interesting pieces from spring/summer collections which they mixed with winter gear.
While must-have bags for fall and winter were too tiny, one of the major spring/summer 2014 trends is an oversized clutch. Big clutches are very handy because you can fit anything you like inside them, but you can also squeeze and fold them so that they don’t take too much space. They can look very urban and modern like the ones from Topshop Unique, elegant and feminine like the ones from Dries Van Noten, or even deadly serious and ideal for a working woman such as Mulberry ones made out of leather. Speaking of leather, python skin is going to be omnipresent this year, but as for the spring/summer bags, the ones from Christian Dior are very special because they are dyed in bright, funky colors. Croco skin is also trendy and you can choose from classical Bottega Veneta ones to Michael Kors’s trendy big clutches.
The most talked about slogan bags for the forthcoming season are definitely Kate Spade’s book clutches, but the pretties girly clutches of the season are probably Burberry ones because of beautiful pastel shades and delicate floral appliques. Arty prints is one of the key trends for the forthcoming season and the best examples are Prada and Chanel handbags. Prada also has lovely croco leather bags embellished with jewels, while Miu Miu accessories are inspired by 1960-s and are made in lovely pastel hues. On the other hand, Lanvin metallic bin bags are just revolutionary, Tory Burch created wonderful collection of bags covered in wallpaper-like florals, Carven designed beautiful furoshiki inspired cloth bags and Marc Jacobs and Valentino went for boho style.
Karl Lagerfeld’s wedding dress for Chanel Couture was daring and innovative not only because of it’s relaxed silhouette and semi-transparent hi-tech fabric, but also because he matched it with luxurious running shoes embellished with Massaro jewels that allegedly cost around $ 4000. He left us wondering if the boundary between couture and ready-to-wear became to blurry and irrelevant.
And while Lagerfeld combined evening glamour with urbanwear, Jean Paul Gaultier transformed a wedding gown into a butterfly-shaped bodysuit and a bride into a pin-up star dressed up in white lace, feathers and fishnet tights.
Giambattista Valli was subversive in his own way and while making super luxurious and colorful floor-length red carpet gowns adorned with flowers, his wedding dress was a 1960-s inspired mini cocktail dress with flower-shaped crystal embellishments and a pink bow.
Inspired by avant-garde art Raf Simons created a futuristic, asymmetrical wedding dress for Dior. It is strapless and embellished with white flowers and crystals, and the silk it is made from is so lightweight that it literally floats around the body.
Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad created big flamboyant dresses covered in hundreds of beautiful hand-stitched floral appliques, Donatella Versace designed a tight and revealing sexy gown adorned with pearls and crystals and Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccoli made a simple but adorable wedding dress from luxurious white lace.
Maria Grazia Churi and Pierpaolo Piccoli created another dreamy, fairy-tale like collection for Valentino. It is inspired by eccentricity and is very colorful and flamboyant. Some of the pieces from the collection are done in black and white and are reminiscence of the beautiful fall/winter 2013 collection with scalloped edges and bows around the neck, but also introduced new elements such as wider collars made from PVC and sequins.
Two motifs are repeatedly appearing in the collection: howls printed on coats, sweaters as well as on winter dresses, and colorful butterflies scattered on skirts, jackets, cocktail dresses and evening gowns. Pieces with the butterfly print were even photographed against the background that mimics the pattern, which looks very eccentric.
The collection features several fantastic little black dresses from elegant, evening ones with sequins to simple models for every occasion. There are some incredible coats decorated with bold prints, which look very warm and cozy and, of course, impeccably tailored full length gowns from black and white to gold and Valentino red.
Inspired by military and infused with multicolored jeans and army patterns, Valentino spring/summer collection for men is pretty casual and modern, but also very stylish. From plain white T-shirts which are playing an important role in the styling of the show, to shirt-like shaped leather jackets, the collection features many relaxed pieces. While making this collection, the designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli experimented with denim and mixed different shades to create suits that look very elegant.
The collection is ideal for a modern man who wants to look both smart and casual. It also includes classical suits, camouflage sweaters and even a few pieces with cool floral and animal prints. It is accompanied by chic leather accessories in various colors from bright yellow to soft grey.
It is time to think about buying shoes for a Christmas party! If you are going for the simple and elegant dress, you can add a bit of craziness to your outfit with right accessories. Charlotte Olympia created another wonderful Christmas collection this year, and it features some amazing golden sandals, but also a pair of black stilettos with golden platform and mistletoe tied with red ribbon on top. The whole collection is very cheerful and festive, and includes quirky pieces such as gingerbread man shaped bag, Christmas pudding pouch and a red PVC gift box clutch.
If you find Charlotte Olympia’s accessories too eccentric, you can consider Christian Louboutin or Jimmy Choo who made some lavish Christmassy bejeweled pumps. There also are some amazing Miu Miu high heels embellished with sparkly beads from resort 2014 collection which is already in the shops. However, if you are looking for perfect red shoes, think of Dolce&Gabbana or Valentino recent collections.
