From Prada bejeweled dresses to Louis Vuitton black embellishments, we have seen a lot of chunky beads at spring/summer shows. Marni collection features some heavily embellished sportswear and Christopher Bailey’s collection for Burberry included some incredible pieces studded with chunky jewels. This season’s novelty are big sparkly rocks, even though some designers such as Roberto Cavalli, Marc Jacobs and Jenny Packham decided to stick to more subtle embellishments. Simone Rocha used big white pearls and stitched them to collars, handbags, shoes and even socks, while Dolce & Gabbana covered their dresses in golden coins and yellow jewels.
When it comes to street style at London Fashion Week it is never just about trends but also about that quirky British style, UK designers and never-ending rain. It is not at all surprising that there are so many eccentric designs at London Fashion Week catwalks when you see what the fashion crowds are wearing. They will actually buy all of it.
From Poppy Delevingne in Erdem dress to Alexa Chung rocking the heart printed Burberry bag, see modXchange’s favorite street style looks from London Fashion Week:
London Fashion Week always surprises us with funny and quirky designs and crazy accessories. It didn’t disappoint us this year since we saw very eccentric accessories from furry royal guard hats by Daks and ruffled headpieces by John Rocha to Burberry personalized blankets.
Christopher Bailey’s accessories were an absolute hit. He showed us a brand new way to wear a printed scarf and painted bags, boots and belts with flower motifs. He also designed some amazing kilim inspired totes and shocked us with a range of colorful blankets with woven initials of models.
Towards the end of week we saw Anya Hindmarch show with kooky bags inspired by British products such as Ariel washing powder, Swan matches, Custard Cream biscuits and even bags of crisps. It was her witty answer to logomania trend which is going to be very popular this year, but there are some cute logotype-free handbags too.
When it comes to shoes, there were plenty of imaginative designs from Emilio de la Morena’s open toe velvet shoes to Sophia Webster colorful heels.
One of the most exciting things about every fashion week is monitoring fashion trends at front rows, parties and streets. New York fashion crowd is always cool and stylish, without being too eccentric and flamboyant. Apart from celebrities, it is always fun to see what bloggers and magazine editors are wearing. This week they were sporting mainly warm clothes as weather conditions were harsh, but there were also some interesting pieces from spring/summer collections which they mixed with winter gear.
Cara Delevingne’s oldest sister Chloe, 29, married property developer Ed Grant and it was a proper posh wedding party which started at exclusive Mark’s club in London’s Mayfair and continued at Claridge’s hotel. She tied the knot for the second time, after she has left her first husband Louis Buckworth, nightclub enterpreneur, whom she married in 2007, and her model sisters Poppy, 27, and Cara, 21, acted as her bridesmades. Celebrity guests included Cara’s grandmother Joan Collins, Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice and Geri Halliwell.
The three sisters looked very stylish in their chic but simple outfits. While 22-weeks pregnant bride wore white Grecian wedding dress, teamed it with fur-trimmed cape, vintage jewelry and Valentino satin shoes, Poppy looked elegant in a navy Chanel dress and boucle jacket, paired with small Jimmy Choo handbag. Cara was head-to-toe in Burberry, wearing tight-fitting navy dress, khaki coat, black and white clutch and a pair of sandals.
While must-have bags for fall and winter were too tiny, one of the major spring/summer 2014 trends is an oversized clutch. Big clutches are very handy because you can fit anything you like inside them, but you can also squeeze and fold them so that they don’t take too much space. They can look very urban and modern like the ones from Topshop Unique, elegant and feminine like the ones from Dries Van Noten, or even deadly serious and ideal for a working woman such as Mulberry ones made out of leather. Speaking of leather, python skin is going to be omnipresent this year, but as for the spring/summer bags, the ones from Christian Dior are very special because they are dyed in bright, funky colors. Croco skin is also trendy and you can choose from classical Bottega Veneta ones to Michael Kors’s trendy big clutches.
The most talked about slogan bags for the forthcoming season are definitely Kate Spade’s book clutches, but the pretties girly clutches of the season are probably Burberry ones because of beautiful pastel shades and delicate floral appliques. Arty prints is one of the key trends for the forthcoming season and the best examples are Prada and Chanel handbags. Prada also has lovely croco leather bags embellished with jewels, while Miu Miu accessories are inspired by 1960-s and are made in lovely pastel hues. On the other hand, Lanvin metallic bin bags are just revolutionary, Tory Burch created wonderful collection of bags covered in wallpaper-like florals, Carven designed beautiful furoshiki inspired cloth bags and Marc Jacobs and Valentino went for boho style.
UK fashion designers completely reinvented the Christmas jumper this year and made a boring old woolly jumper with tacky wintery motifs into a fabulous designer piece. Christmas jumpers are hugely popular in the UK with all high street shops such as Topshop, Primark, Marks & Spencer, Dorothy Perkins, New Look and Miss Selfridge selling them. Far from being an embarrassing present from your granny, it is cool and fashionable.
Christmas jumper was never as popular as this season since it has been given a luxurious makeover. In order to raise the money for Save the Children, 14 British labels including Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood, Anya Hindmarch and House of Holland created unique festive jumpers to be sold at the charity auction which will take place on December 13th in London.
Each of the designers had a different idea of a luxurious makeover of the Christmas jumper. While Anya Hindmarch played with words and wrote “Save the children anagrams to deliver cash then” on her jumper, and Burberry created a cute “Burberry with love” jumper with hearts and landmarks of London, Alexander McQueen jumper is embellished with white crocheted flowers and Christmas decorations. The collection will be displayed at Westfield London from November 28th.
