“Life is a butterfly”, said Jean Paul Gaultier whose spring 2014 couture show was inspired by the butterflies. They literally flooded the catwalk in all shapes and forms: as flamboyant hair accessories, vivid prints and sparkly embellishments. By using his famous draped-jersey technique he even created complex butterfly shapes which are clasping the body so perfectly. The whole collection is very colorful and extravagant. It is impeccably tailored from luxurious fabrics and adorned with sequins, beads, appliques and jewelry pieces.
One of his most beautiful creations in this collection is a butterfly shaped black and blue mini dress worn by pin-up diva Dita Von Teese. It is a burlesque style corset dress with butterfly wings around hips and shoulders, but there is also a similar one with a more relaxed silhouette and slightly brighter shades of blue. Gaultier named the girls wearing his butterfly dresses “Papillons de Paris” because they are refined chic ladies during the day and sexy showgirls at night.
