Monday   f  a  s  h  i  o  n   pressed into def curve with celebratory at   E  L  L  E  ’ s   Women in H o l l y w o o d  awards.  Colour was overt and present recondite.  The surprise, an inspiring acceptance speech, spirited by the superbly talented actress Viola Davis.  Accepting honour for her rise in arts and entertainment echelons, the thesp shared homage of personal vision from childhood to present.  A little girl hosting imaginary tea parties with accoutrements made entirely of air, she segued to queue industry and entertainment to expand its own vision for future opportunities.  Two days prior to ELLE’s evening laud, the co-star of the well-received feature The Help, Octavia Spencer, shared with People magazine Davis became a mom “like, two days ago.”  Earlier this August, Viola and her husband, actor Julian Tennon, father of two from a previous union, announced they’d made plans to adopt.  Proud mama and papa, they’ve welcomed home latest family, daughter Genesis.

Davis was joined by stars Barbra Streisand, Jennifer Aniston, Michelle Pfeiffer and Naomi Watts and this year’s honorees at ELLE’s 18th annual Women in Hollywood awards.  The Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, California played to the glitz with other favourties Evan Rachel Wood, Freida Pinto and rising starlet Elizabeth Olsen, sister to stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Editor-in-chief Robbie Myers. ELLE magazine opined in press, adding crescendo to the luminescence of the eve.  “As has long been our tradition, this year we honor an extraordinary group of women who continue to redefine what is possible in Hollywood.”

The renowned honour, the L’Oreal Paris Legend Award, was presented to Hollywood actress and music performer Streisand.

Elizabeth was awarded the Calvin Klein Collection Emerging Star Award.  Young “Lizzie” Olsen is star of 2011 upcoming and critically-acclaimed movie, Martha Marcy May Marlene, releasing in U.S. theatres from Fox Searchlight, October 21.

Davis’ rousing acceptance bow deflected little and addressed openly the realities of social marginalization.

“What keeps me in the business is hope, and that’s the hope that women of colour are also part of the narrative.  [I’m] sending a telepathic message to you: Every time some young actress of colour comes in a room with a character they’re auditioning for that’s not ethnically specific, that you have a space in your brain that can open up and embrace them and allow them in, because I’m telling you, their lives are just as fascinating and multifaceted.”

Her speech, elegant and purposeful, incited a rousing ovation, matched with applaud by Chelsea Handler, executive producer of E! skein. The Chelsea Handler Show.
